ETMA Previous Conferences

ETMA holds technical conferences every 2-3 years on environmental issues in the petroleum and petrochemical industries.  The conferences provide an excellent opportunity for environmental professionals to exchange technical information, make contacts, and learn about new equipment and services.

Following are five conferences held in the past:

Five Specialty Conference on Environmental Progress in the Petroleum & Petrochemical Industries (EnviroAraiba 2007):

"Environmental Sustainability & Future Challenges"

The EnviroArabia 2007 conference and exhibition was held April 22-25 at the Gulf Conference Centre in Bahrain with the theme "Environmental Sustainability & Future Challenges". This event was organized by ETMA, the Saudi Arabia Water Environment Association (SAWEA), and the Bahrain Society of Engineers. This was the Fifth Specialty Conference on Environmental Progress in the Petroleum and Petrochemical Industries held since 1995. More than eighty (80) technical papers were presented to an audience of around four hundred and thirty (430) registered delegates. Thirty five (35)environmental organizations participated in the exhibition. Approximately one hundred and fifty (150) environmental professionals attended the six technical workshops held in conjunction with the conference. Workshop topics included: MARPOL Annex VI regulations on marine fuels/air emissions, Environmental Practices Review, Introduction to Air Pollution Control, Environmental Impacts of industrial Processes, Air Quality Impact Analysis Using AERMOD, and MBR Operations, Maintenance and Design. Dr. Mohamed F. Dahab, President of the Water Environment Federation and Professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, delivered a keynote address entitled “The Water Environment Federation: Responding to the Challenges to the Global Water Environment”. Dr. Alan W. Gertler, Research Professor at Desert Research Institute, represented the Air & Waste Management Association (A&WMA; the parent organization of ETMA) and delivered a keynote address on “Measurements and Sources of PM2.5, PM10, Volatile Organic Compounds, and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Greater Cairo”. Other keynote speakers included: Daniel J. Sullenbarger, of Marathon Oil Corporation and Chairman of IPIECA; Lisa Henthorne, of the International Desalination Association; Ian Sealy, of Schlumberger; Richard Schulze, of Trinity Consultants (and former President of the A&WMA); Basel Al-Yousfi, of UNEP-ROWA; and Professor Philip J.W. Roberts, of GeorgiaTech.

Fourth Specialty Conference on Environmental Progress in the Petroleum & Petrochemical Industries:

"Creative Solutions"

Conference successfully held in Bahrain during February 23-25, 2004, with the associated workshops during February 21-22.

Third Conference on Environmental Progress in the Petroleum & Petrochemical Industries:

The latest conference (May 1-3, 2000) was also held in Bahrain in conjunction with the Bahrain Society of Engineers.  Bahrain's Minister for Housing, Municipalities and Environment, H.E. Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, Bahrain, opened the conference by saying that environmental issues influence the economics, development, security and health of a nation. "We are all citizens of one world and we must take shared responsibility for its future and for its sustainable development," he explained. Robert Hall, president of the Air & Waste Management, also spoke at the opening session.

Approximately 200 engineers, scientists, government officials, members of academia, and others were attracted by the high quality technical sessions and exhibition.

Approximately 200 engineers, scientists, government officials, members of academia, and others were attracted by the high quality technical sessions, exhibition and associated short courses.

Speakers from the EPA, the Business Council for Sustainable Development, the United Nations Environment Program and many other organizations gave informative keynote presentations. In addition, about 40 technical papers addressed climate change, environmental management, air quality, waste management, wastewater, oil spill response and marine pollution issues.

A series of interactive short courses conducted by well-known experts ran alongside the conference, giving the event added depth. The course topics were "Risk Analysis: A Tool for Environmental Management," "Environmental Management Systems Design and Implementation" and "Fundamentals of Air Dispersion Modeling". An exhibition on the conference sidelines displayed and demonstrated the activities, products and services of companies, consultants and research organizations in the environmental field.

The event included a field trip to Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) in Bahrain, which is the first petrochemical complex in the Middle East to be certified to both the ISO 9002 quality standard and ISO 14001 environmental management standard.

"We strongly believe that these periodic environmental conferences are essential to the Arabian Gulf area, for they give environmental professionals the opportunity to share the latest developments in their fields," explained Ms. Shadia Ala'ud-Din, Chair of the Saudi Arabian Section.  "The mission of our Section is to develop environmental awareness in the area, increase networking opportunities, enhance knowledge and competency, and promote global environmental responsibility".

First and Second Conference on Environmental Progress in the Petroleum & Petrochemical  Industries:

The first two conferences in 1995 and 1997 were held in Bahrain, in conjunction with the Bahrain Society of Engineers. They each attracted well over 200 participants and included over 60 technical papers, which were delivered by specialists around the world.  The presentations covered general environmental and regulatory topics as well as air quality, waste management, solid waste, marine pollution and waste water issues. Exhibitions held on the sidelines of the conferences displayed and demonstrated the activities, products and services of companies, consultants and research organizations in the environmental field. Short courses on ISO 14000 and air dispersion modeling were held on the two days prior to the conference.
