March 24 Dinner Meeting

"Developing a U.K. Strategy for Marine Environmental Monitoring" is the topic of our next dinner meeting, which will be held on Sunday, March 24. The speaker will be Sean Higgins, Business Development Manager with CEFAS, the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science. CEFAS, the sponsor of this meeting, is a UK-based research and consultancy center that provides services in environmental monitoring and assessment, fisheries science and management, and fish farming to clients around the world.

Traditional marine monitoring programs provide useful data on the state of the environment in terms of hydrocarbons, metals, bathing beach quality and harmful algal blooms, and they may allow some analysis regarding changes of environmental quality. However, they do not allow conclusions to be drawn about overall environmental quality in relation to the needs for management and do not provide an early warning for potential problems.

In the U.K., regulators are calling for an ecosystem approach to the management of marine systems.  The government is developing an integrated policy framework for the sustainable management and use of the marine environment.  As part of this process,  CEFAS has been assisting the Marine Pollution Monitoring Management Group with the task of reviewing current national monitoring programs and formulating a forward strategy. Mr. Higgins will discuss various aspects of this effort and how it will benefit the environment.

Mr Higgins has nine years experience as a Land Use consultant and Business Developer. He is a qualified Soil Chemist from the University of Natal, South Africa. He has worked in a number of countries including Zimbabwe, South Africa, North America and the United Kingdom and has assisted in developing opportunities for Agri- and Environmental businesses.

The meeting venue is the Al-Diwan Hall at the Gulf Meridien Hotel in Al-Khobar. Registration is at 6:30 pm, the presentation will begin at 7:00 pm, and dinner will follow. There will be a charge of SR 15 for members and SR 30 for non-members. If you plan to attend, please register by contacting Talal Al-Enazi at tel. 03-874-6427, e-mail enezitf@aramco.com.sa, fax 873-9331, or register online at our new website: www.awma-sa.org.

Recap of Feb. Meeting

The February 3 meeting in Jubail featured J. Ron Jernigan, P.E., DEE, Source Industry Manager with Thermo Environmental Instruments, USA. His presentation was titled "Recent Advances in CEMS and Flow Monitoring in the United States". Since the promulgation of the Title IV "Acid Rain Regulations" in the USA, the electric utility industry installed and certified over 1,500 new continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMS) in a period of less than five years. This presentation identified and discussed the most widely used monitoring technologies and sampling acquisition techniques selected by the electric utility industry to comply with these strict regulations.

Many thanks to Al-Sinan & Partner for sponsoring this informative meeting.

Two Upcoming Dinner Meetings:  January 20 and February 3

Sunday, January 20

Our first dinner meeting of the New Year will be held jointly with the Symposium on Maritime Disaster Management.  The speaker will be Dr. Michael A. Champ, Editor-in-Chief, Spill Science & Technology Bulletin and President of the Advanced Technology Research Projects.

The title of the presentation is "The Window-of-Opportunity Concept Applied to Oil Spill Response and Clean-up Technologies". Dr. Champ will present an overview of the Technology Windows-of-Opportunity concept and Management Advisory SYSTEM. The concept uses performance effectiveness data for oil spill response technologies derived from scientific and engineering laboratory, mesoscale, and experimental field studies. These data have been correlated to a wide range of viscosities of different weathering stages of tanker transported oils into a dynamic oil weathering database to identify and estimate time periods, called "technology windows-of-opportunity." In these win-dows, specific response methods, technologies, equipment, or products are more effective during clean-up operations for specific oils.

The meeting venue is the Dhahran International Hotel. Registration is at 6:30 pm, the presentation will begin at 7:00 pm, and dinner will follow. There will be a charge of SR 15 for members and SR 30 for non-members. If you plan to attend, please register by contacting Talal Al-Enazi at tel. 03-874-6427, fax 873-9331, e-mail enezitf@aramco.com.sa -- or register online at our new website: www.awma-sa.org.
